Are You a Good Candidate for Lap Band Procedures?

Last updated 2 months ago

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately one-third of all adults in the United States are obese. Obesity can increase the risk of a number of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Fortunately, weight loss surgery provides an option for individuals who are unable to lose weight with diet and exercise alone. To learn more, educate yourself on the signs that you may be a good candidate for lap band surgery.

Candidates for the Procedure

There are a number of factors that may indicate your candidacy for the oBand medical weight loss procedure. Ideal candidates for lap band surgery include adults that are at least 18 years of age with a BMI, or body mass index, of 40 or above. Individuals who have been overweight for a long period of time or are twice their ideal weight may also be candidates for the oBand procedure. However, it is important that candidates do not consume alcohol in excess and are committed to making changes to their eating and lifestyle habits. It is also important that candidates are committed to working with medical weight loss specialists and attending all follow-up appointments.

Factors That May Prevent Candidacy

Certain factors may suggest that you are not a candidate for lap band surgeries. Individuals who have heart conditions, lung conditions, or inflammatory conditions of their gastrointestinal tract may not be candidates for these procedures. Patients who have portal hypertension, cirrhosis, or chronic pancreatitis, or who are currently pregnant are also not candidates for the oBand procedure. In addition, individuals who have an irregular esophagus, intestine, or stomach may also be prohibited from undergoing the procedure. Lastly, individuals who are suffering from drug or alcohol addiction, have suffered an intra-operative gastric injury, or have an infection that risks surgical contamination are usually not candidates.

The best way to determine if stomach banding is right for you is to consult with your weight loss surgery center. For more information on your candidacy, give oBand Centers in Miami a call at (888) 686-2741.
